About the torch
The butane torch is the part that gets the most questions. It sounds more intense than it is.
It's the same small torch you'd use for crème brûlée. You set the ring on the ceramic burn board that comes in the box, hold the flame about an inch and a half above it and move it in slow circles. The piece goes from matte grey to an even orange-red glow, and once it's glowing you hold it there for 90 seconds. Then you let it cool and brush the surface with a wire brush. That's the whole firing process.
