The basics

What is silver clay?

It is real silver in a soft, clay-like form. You shape it with your hands like modeling clay, then heat it. The clay part burns away and you are left with a solid piece of pure silver.

Is it actually real silver?

Yes. Once fired, your ring is 99.9% fine silver, the same metal used in fine jewelry.

Do I need any experience?

No. The kit is made for complete beginners. If you can shape play dough, you can make a ring.

How long does it take to make a ring?

Plan two to three hours from start to finished ring if you let it air dry, or around an hour and a half if you speed up the drying with a hair dryer. Active hands-on time is about 45 minutes. The rest is waiting.

The kit

What is in the kit?

Everything you need to make a silver ring at home: 99.9% fine silver clay, a ring sizer, a wooden mandrel for shaping, an acrylic support, a clay sculpting knife and modeling tool, a wire brush, sandpaper, a polish tool, a burner attachment for firing, a ceramic burn board, and a QR card that opens the step-by-step guide.

Is a torch or gas included?

The burner attachment, which is the torch head, is included. The gas canister is not, because it cannot be shipped safely. You can pick up a standard butane canister at any hardware or camping store.

Do I need a kiln or an oven?

No. You fire the silver at home with the included torch. No kiln, no special equipment.

How much silver clay is in a kit?

Each Solo kit contains 5g of silver clay, enough to make one ring. The Duo kit has twice the clay so two people can each make their own.

Can I make an extra ring?

Yes. On both kit pages there is a dropdown that adds clay for one more ring. Solo goes from one ring to two, Duo goes from two to three. It is the same clay we put in the kits, and it ships in the same box.

What ring sizes can I make?

The included ring sizer and mandrel cover the common adult sizes. You shape the ring to fit your own finger.

Making the ring

Is it safe to do at home?

Yes, when you follow the guide. You fire on the ceramic burn board that comes in the box, so you already have the heatproof surface. Keep it clear of anything flammable and work in a ventilated room, the same care you would take with a kitchen stove.

Can kids do this?

It involves an open flame, so it is made for adults. Kids can help with the shaping part under adult supervision, but the firing step should be done by an adult.

What if my ring cracks or does not turn out?

It happens to everyone at first, and most problems are easy to fix. The guide walks you through the common ones. If the clay dries out, cracks, or will not fire, you can usually rework it.

Does the silver shrink when fired?

Yes. The clay contracts as it fires, so the ring comes out smaller than the one you shaped. You shape three full sizes above your target: if you wear a size 7, you shape at the size 10 mark on the mandrel. The ring sizer and the guide walk you through it.

Can I add a gemstone?

Yes. Choose the gemstone option in the dropdown on either kit page and a torch-safe stone comes with your order. You press it into the clay while shaping, so the silver holds it after firing rather than glue. If you would rather use a stone you already own, check that it is lab-grown or cubic zirconia. Many natural stones crack or lose their color at firing temperature.

Ordering and shipping
