How it works
from clay to silver, in one evening
About 45 minutes of hands-on time per ring. The rest is drying and firing. Every number here is the one in the step-by-step guide we send you by email.
1 / 4
Shape it
Measure your finger, then build three sizes up: a size 7 finger means shaping at the size 10 mark on the mandrel, because the clay shrinks in the fire. Roll the clay into an even strand, wrap it around the mandrel and blend the seam away. Once the clay is open you have about 15 minutes, and the guide counts them down for you.
2 / 4
Dry it
20 to 25 minutes on the mandrel, then twist it off and let it dry right through on the ceramic platform, up to an hour. A hair dryer speeds it up. Tap it lightly: a dry ring sounds hard and gives nothing.
3 / 4
Fire it
Ring flat on the ceramic platform, room slightly dimmed. Keep the tip of the blue flame about 2 cm (3/4 inch) from the ring and keep it circling. The ring turns chalky white, then glows orange-red. Hold that glow for 7 minutes and the clay becomes 99.9% fine silver.
4 / 4
Finish it
Let it cool for 10 minutes. Scrub the white layer off with the wire brush and the silver appears underneath. Then work the sanding papers from coarse to fine until you like the shine.
Before you order
questions people ask
Do I need any experience?
No. The kit is made for complete beginners. If you can shape play dough, you can make a ring.
Is a torch or gas included?
The torch head is included. The gas canister is not, because it cannot be shipped safely. You can find standard butane gas canisters in grocery shops, or in camping and hardware shops.
Does the silver shrink when fired?
Yes. The clay contracts as it fires, so the ring comes out smaller than the one you shaped. You shape three full sizes above your target: if you wear a size 7, you shape at the size 10 mark on the mandrel. The ring sizer and the guide walk you through it.
Do I need a kiln, and is it safe at home?
No kiln. You fire the silver on your own table with the included torch head. You use a small handheld flame for a short time, so you work on a heatproof surface, keep it away from anything flammable and open a window. The binder is plant-based and its smoke is not toxic.
What is the gemstone pack?
Torch-safe stones you press into the clay while shaping, so the silver holds them after firing rather than glue. Switch it on above and pick as many colors as you like: each color is $10 for 2 stones, whatever number of rings you picked. If you would rather use a stone you already own, check that it is lab-grown or cubic zirconia. Many natural stones crack or lose their color at firing temperature.
Where do you ship, and how long does it take?
We ship to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Thailand. Standard shipping is free on every kit, already included in the price, and arrives in 7 to 12 business days. Express is $15 more, added at checkout, and arrives in 5 to 8 business days. Every parcel is tracked. Import duties and taxes are on us. Kits are dispatched from our workshop in Thailand.
What if my ring cracks or does not turn out?
It happens to everyone at first, and most problems are easy to fix. If the clay dries out, cracks, or will not fire, you can usually rework it. The troubleshooting guide walks you through the common ones.
Making rings with someone else? The Duo carries twice the clay, a second mandrel and a second acrylic plate, so you each shape your own ring side by side. It's the version couples and mother-daughter pairs reach for.
The RingLab Solo is a complete silver clay kit for one person. You shape the ring at your kitchen table, fire it with the included torch head on the ceramic firing platform, and wear 99.9% fine silver you made yourself. The box holds 5g of silver clay for every ring you choose and one set of tools. The only thing you add is a standard butane gas canister.
